Nintendo Indie World – December 2019

Nintendo held their Indie World presentation yesterday. Some announcements were exciting, others…. not so much. For that reason, I’ve decided to only highlight the few titles that stuck out to me personally. You can check out their Indie World Showcase here.

Sports Story

Sports Story is the sequel to the 2017 indie hit Golf Story. For those of you that don’t know, Gold Story was a game about golfing but in the most unconventional sense; it mixed RPG elements with classic golf gameplay that is akin to classic golf games on the NES.

In Gold Story, however, Sidebar Games aims to up the ante by not just including one extra sport but literally all of them. I have to say, as someone who doesn’t particularly care about sports in the slightest, these games make a really compelling argument to give them a try.

Sports Story is set to release in mid 2020.

Supermash

Imagine for a moment that you are a game developer and you are tasked to combine two classic video game genres and mix them together in an attempt to create a fun experience. Well, it turns out you don’t need to imagine it because there’s a game on its way that will do that for you and it’s called Supermash.

In some ways, Supermash can resemble most game maker video games like RPG Maker or Super Mario Maker, but don’t be fooled. Supermash is a randomly generating game-making machine whose sole purpose is to mash-up two genres of classic games and create a randomly generated experience where no two games are the same.

Find a combination you enjoy? Post the game code online for others to input and enjoy themselves. In fact, the game’s director Joseph M. Tringali came on to briefly talk about this feature. He even shared his own game code for us to input when the game launches in May of 2020. The game code he shared is: ZYX1W1

The Talos Principle: Deluxe Edition

The Talos Principle: Deluxe Edition by Croteam is a game that draws heavy inspiration from classic games such as Myst. In this first-person puzzle adventure, you’ll be making your way as you “divert drones, manipulate laser beams, and even replicate time”. I have no idea what the time replication is all about but I’m all in.

There’s another title this game reminds me of and it’s called The Witness. Much like The Talos Principle, The Witness is a first-person puzzle adventure. However, your main mode of solving puzzles involves you connecting lines through mazes. If this title interests you in the slightest, then I highly recommend giving The Witness a chance if you haven’t already.

Thankfully you won’t have to wait long, because The Talos Principle: Deluxe Edition is available now on the Switch eshop.

Axiom Verge 2

Out of everything that was announced today, easily the one that ranks above them all for me is Axiom Verge 2, and I know I’m not alone in sharing my excitement for the announcement of this title.

Created by Thomas Happ Games, Axiom Verge was a surprise indie hit that caught everyone off guard when it launched back in 2015. With an aesthetic heavily influenced by the famous Metroid series, Axiom Verge aimed to not only emulate the classic Metroidvania formula but transform it into its own uniquely twisted way.

While Axiom Verge was a breath of fresh air with its innovative gameplay and smart level design, as it turns out it was only scratching the surface for what Thomas Happ truly had in store for us.

With the sequel coming out this time next year, if you haven’t given Axiom Verge a chance as of yet, now is the perfect time to do so. Just do yourself a favor and go into the game as blind as you can. I’m someone that tends to like discussing spoilers in my articles and discussions, so when someone like me discourages spoilers about something, just know how much weight that really holds when it comes to games like this.

Axiom Verge 2 is set to release in the fall of 2020.
