Games of the Last Decade Ranked – (Part 4)

Second verse, same as the first! It’s time to continue with our look back at the games that released in the last decade. As usual, if the game is on this list, it’s because it released sometime between January 1st, 2010 and December 31st, 2019, in addition to being a title that I have actually played. I apologize in advance if your favorite game didn’t make my list… now let’s get to it!

#60 – inFamouse: Second Son

Platform

Playstation 4

Release Date

March 21, 2014

I was a fan of Sucker Punch’s superhero action-adventure series and was looking forward to their follow up on the Playstation 4. In a lot of ways, this game propelled the franchise into the next generation; in other ways, it falls flatter than a pancake. In the older games, you had access to a series of electric-based abilities, but in this one, they expanded on that dramatically in all the right ways. However, my main problem is that the game ended way too soon, and I just wanted to see more.

#59 – Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus

Platform

Playstation 3

Release Date

November 12, 2013

There was a lot of love about this entry in the R&C franchise. It had some great weapons, fun Clank levels, and at launch, it was $40 in a world of $60 games. However, my problem I had with it was its length (I feel like I’m having Deja Vu). There’s nothing that can make or break an experience for me more than the length of a game, and Into the Nexus is no exception.

#58 – Bit.Trip Saga

Platform

Nintendo 3DS

Release Date

September 13, 2011

Honestly, this collection was great, you won’t hear any complaints from me. It was simple, easy to navigate, and contained great indie rhythm games. Now you might be wondering why I put this collection on here as opposed to putting the games contained in the collection on this list separately. This is because this collection is the way I played those games, and honestly because of the small nature of each title I’m not sure I could justify giving each one their own slot. On top of that, I don’t think they all released during this decade so I wouldn’t have added them separately anyway. The only negative I can think of about this collection is that it is not available on the Nintendo Switch.

#57 – Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Platform

Wii U

Release Date

November 21, 2014

Super Smash Bros. has never been a series I ever paid that much attention to because I just don’t get into competitive style games. That was until I made some friends who were super into the series, and while I still don’t feel that much enthusiasm for the franchise, I enjoy it a great deal more than I used to. Now if only we could get Sora into Smash Bros., then I could die happy…

#56 – Crypt of the Necrodancer

Platform

Steam, iOS, Playstation Vita, Playstation 4, XBOX One, Nintendo Switch

Release Date

April 23, 2015

There are so many things about this game that shouldn’t work, but end up working way better than you’d expect. In this rogue-like dungeon crawler, your maneuverability and attack are restrained to the beat of the music. It is the kind of mechanic that’s easy to learn but difficult to master.

#55 – Overcooked

Platform

Steam, Playstation 4, XBOX One, Nintendo Switch

Release Date

August 2, 2016

If you’re looking for a game to ruin life long friendships then this is it. Joking aside, this game is super fun when you play with someone that knows how to play. But seriously, only play with someone if they know what they’re doing… Otherwise, stick to the single-player.

#54 – Ratchet & Clank

Platform

Playstation 4

Release Date

April 12, 2016

So I’m conflicted when it comes to this game. On one hand, it’s (mostly) a faithful recreation/reimagining of the original Playstation 2 title, but on the other hand, it’s a movie tie in-game that I personally feel was an afterthought. This is something I will go more in detail at a later date when I review this game.

#53 – Just Cause 3

Platform

Steam, Playstation 4, XBOX One

Release Date

December 1, 2015

If Michael Bay directed an 80’s inspired action-adventure video game, this would be it. There’s not much of a plot, but the story is also not the point. It’s pure adrenaline-filled stunts and nonstop action. If you’re not a fan of GTA style antics in video games, then this one might not be for you.

#52 – Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep

Platform

Playstation Portable, Playstation 3, Playstation 4, XBOX One

Release Date

September 7, 2010

I didn’t have a Playstation Portable growing up. In fact, I didn’t have a handheld video game system until the 3DS. So naturally, I never played this when it originally released, all I could do was rely on janky walkthroughs on YouTube. Then in 2014, Square Enix released the Kingdom Hearts 2.5 collection containing this game. While it was very much a handheld game with some questionable design choices, I’d be lying if I said it didn’t have loads of entertainment value and replayability.

#51 – Super Meat Boy

Platform

Steam, XBOX 360, XBOX One, Playstation Vita, Playstation 4, Wii U, Nintendo Switch

Release Date

October 20, 2010

Super Meat Boy was a tongue in cheek homage to classic platforming titles. Not only did it have top-notch humor, but also featured some of the most satisfying gameplay I’ve experienced in a while. There’s just something so endearing yet morbid about watching all of your failed attempts playing alongside your 1 successful run, and I love it!
