Playstation State of Play – December 2019

It’s that time of year again where the holidays are here and gaming companies shell out some last-minute end-of-the-year announcements for games coming out next year. To start things off, let’s take a look at Playstation’s entry with their State of Play video presentation.

Untitled Goose Game comes to Playstation 4

For those of you who are not aware, Untitled Goose Game is an Indie hit from the studio House House. Originally released September 20th, 2019 for the Nintendo Switch, this game quickly gained popularity and attention due to its unconventional controls and unique concept.

As the title suggests, in this game you play as a goose whose sole purpose is to cause as much chaos and havoc as possible for the innocent civilians of a quiet English village. You accomplish these tasks via a checklist that you complete as if you’re some goose Hitman for hire.

While the game’s popularity comes from its launch on the Nintendo Switch, Playstation owners who do not currently own the hand-held home console hybrid that missed out on this quirky little experience can get their hands on it when the port launches on December 17th, 2019.

I am someone that bought this game when it came out on the Nintendo Switch and I will be doing a review on it at some point soon. Personally, I’m not that excited about it getting a port on the Playstation mostly because this game really feels like a natural fit for the Nintendo Switch. Due to its short nature, it’s perfect for people on the go who don’t have a ton of time to spend playing video games. Regardless, it’s still nice to see it become more accessible to more people.

New Battle Royale Spell Break announced

Created by Proletariat, a company composed of industry veterans from studios such as Insomniac and Harmonix, Spell Break is an online Battle Royale experience coming to the Playstation 4. It will feature high action spell casting mechanics combined with Battle Royale style survival which should prove to be a major thrill ride for fans of this genre.

Personally, I’ve never been big on Battle Royales. I understand their appeal and they do have a place in the community. However, I’d be lying if I said that this is a title I’m heavily looking forward to. That being said, early access to the Beta will begin as early as the Spring of 2020. If interested, you can sign up for access to the Beta here.

Dreams gets an official release date.

Dreams is a game that lets you create the games of your dreams; if you can imagine it, you can create it. Up until now, the game had been in its early access stage, but starting February 14th, 2020 people can get their hands on the official release.

This is one game that caught my attention years ago when it was originally revealed at E3 2015, but at the time none of us really knew what to expect from it. Fast forward a few years later and they announced the early access Beta. It was at this point that we finally got a good look at the game.

Essentially Dreams is a game aimed at encouraging game development for a new generation. The team behind this interesting title was actually the brainchildren behind the level editor in the popular Little Big Planet series, and it shows. From the overall aesthetic to functionality, you can really tell how the developer’s time with Little Big Planet ultimately influenced the creation of this game.

The Playstation gains a new perspective in Superliminal

Slated to release in 2020, SUPERLIMINAL aims to warp player’s perspectives as they solve intricate levels through the use of reality-warping perspective based puzzle mechanics. While not much information was given about this title, this is one game I’m going to be keeping a close eye on.

SUPERLIMINAL reminds of another game that deals with shifting perspective as its own puzzle mechanic and that game is called Fez. If you have never tried out Fez, and SUPERLIMINAL managed to catch your attention, then I’d say give Fez a try while we wait for this wonderfully bizarre game to release next year.

Paper Beast gets an official reveal

Paper Beast can be best described as a sand-box VR playground where you bend your will over these paper creatures you encounter. Slated to come during the first quarter of 2020, Paper Beast should at least prove to be interesting, to say the least.

This is a game that didn’t leave much of an impression on me when I saw it. I will say one thing I find interesting about it though, and it’s the fact that it looks like a game that was made in the Dreams editor. Why I find this interesting is because if this game was indeed made in Dreams, then it’s very possible that we may start to see full-blown releases of games created from Dreams. I’m telling you, it’s ridiculous the things that are possible in Dreams.

Kingdom Hearts 3 gets a long-awaited update to a highly anticipated expansion

It’s no secret that Square Enix likes to take their sweet time when releasing information on anything they make, and their Kingdom Hearts series is no exception. After the release of Kingdom Hearts 3 back in January of 2019, fans have been eagerly awaiting what’s next for the series.

The DLC expansion titled “ReMind” aims to do just that. Featuring more scenarios that fleshes out the story, more boss fights, more playable characters, expanded environments, and a level difficulty modifier among many other new additions, it seems as though this expansion is the meaty experience that many fans have been waiting for.

Fans can expect to get their hands on the long-awaited DLC update on January 23rd on Playstation and February 25th on XBOX One. The package deal will cost $30, but if you spend an extra $10 then you will gain access to a special recording of the Kingdom Hearts Orchestra performed in Osaka, Japan on November 30th, 2019; it will feature 19 tracks of live concert music from the Kingdom Hearts series.

Don’t feel like shelling out money for the expansion? That’s okay because, on the same day as the release of the DLC, Kingdom Hearts 3 will receive the 1.07 update. In this free update, fans can expect the addition of the Oath Keeper and Oblivion keyblades, a story update, and new abilities.

As an added bonus, fans can already pre-order the DLC; if you pre-order digitally through the Playstation store, you will be treated to a custom menu theme inspired by the series, complete with Dearly Beloved playing in the background. I already have the DLC pre-order on my account and I can say first hand that I love the theme that they include in the pre-order.

Predator: Hunting Grounds stalks its way to the Playstation 4

Releasing on April 20th, 2020, Predator: Hunting Grounds aims to put fans of the popular 80’s action flic in the driver seat of the titular character.

I don’t have much to say about this one beyond it looking fun for fans of the series.

Square Enix and Platinum Games collaborate together in Babylon’s Fall

In a surprise announcement seemingly coming from nowhere, it was announced that Square Enix would be partnering with Platinum Games once again to bring us Babylon’s Fall. Not much is known about it as of yet, but if you’re a fan of anything that Platinum Games has made then I’m sure this will be right up your ally.

Resident Evil Remake finally gets a release date

The Resident Evil series is one I could never get into for many reasons. That being said, I can honestly say that the Remake for this popular title looks quite good indeed, even if I’m not planning on playing it myself; I’m content with being happy for the fans on this one.

Fans can get their hands on the Resident Evil 3 Remake when it launches on April 3rd, 2020. As an added bonus the game will also include the online-focused Resident Evil: Resistance.

Ghost of Tsushima (kind of) gets an update

Sucker Punch’s latest game is one that tells the intimate story of what it’s like being a samurai. While there still is no concrete information on the game as of yet, during State of Play we were treated to a small teaser which is actually part of a longer trailer which will be released in full during the Game Awards 2019 on December 12th, so only in a couple of days.

Personally, I think they shouldn’t have bothered showing the teaser at all and just surprise people with the full trailer when they intended to since it’s only 2 days away, but ever this is what we have and we will take it.

As always, keep it right here on Galaxy of Geek, and don’t forget to check out Cade’s Arcade for more reviews and videos on all things video-game related. Take care, and I will see you next time!
