Backlog Quest II: Day 6 – Looney Tunes: Acme Arsenal – Rabbit season

Dear Journal,

Today I fought robots as a waskly rabbit.

Looney Tunes: Acme Arsenal is one of those games that exist because someone, somewhere was told to make a game based on a popular license and they had to think of what to do with it.  There have been a fair share of Looney Tunes based video games over the years, but, to my knowledge, none have had the Tunes packing so much heat before.

Despite how it may appear though, Foghorn Leghorn with a shotgun is not nearly as cool you as might think.

I say, I say I hate robot Nazi's.

Dr. Frankenbean has crafted an army of robots and a plan to destroy the Looney Tunes by going back in time and eliminating their ancestors. Using a time machine, Bugs, Daffy and the gang travel back in time to stop him using various power-ups and of course basic combat and platforming. There is something funny about characters that existed during WWII using a time machine to travel back to WWII to save their ancestors though….

Clearly, no longer rabbit season

The game’s first level gives great cause for concern. The castle looks horrible and it doesn’t play very well either, but surprisingly the game starts to not be total crap pretty quickly. Then the Mars missions start, the 2nd stage in the game but they seem horribly rushed and several are basically just “driving” levels that take about a minute. Beyond that though the game takes you to a fair amount of different locations, offers quite a few playable characters and a few more non-playable characters and has some very simple but enjoyable platforming and combat sequences.

Looney Tunes: Acme Arsenal doesn’t even look all that bad, thanks mostly to the fact that the style of the characters ages well.

In case you forgot.

In case you forgot.

There isn’t a whole ton of variance between different character though, and the really cool looking guns you see in the cover art are really just limited power-ups that aren’t always all that useful. Additionally, the castle and Mars levels, probably the least two exciting backdrops, were used far more than the absolute best level; Wackyland. Wackyland is hands down the highlight of the game.

Looney Tunes: Acme Arsenal has probably stayed below your radar for the most part, and for good reason. There isn’t anything overly exciting about it. If anything this very short game manages to get a little repetitive. That said, the iconic characters and basic but well built combat and platforming sequences do make it worth the very short amount of time it takes to play though the game should you get the chance.

Tomorrow I get a snake in my boot with Toy Story Mania.   That’s all folks!
