XBLIG Spotlight: Developer interview with The Working Parts, makers of They Breathe

When I reviewed the XBLIG They Breathe a while back I was kind of blown away. The game was simple, yet amazing. Subtle but in a certain way obvious. To say the least I wanted to know a bit more about how the game came to be and the minds behind it.  Recently the talented group of individuals that make […]

Guest Lectures: The Value of Artistic Integrity: Has XBLIG Been a Failure? By Michael Hicks

As the announcement for the next generation Xbox is soon to be around the corner, some of us have been left wondering about the future of one of the most niche areas of Xbox Live: Xbox Live Indie Games. A number of developers have already closed up shop, claiming that the channel has been a failure, will soon vanish and have decided to move on to “greener pastures” on the PC. Being one of the youngest developers on the channel it could be fair to say I have good amount of innocence left in me, or perhaps I like to be different, but either way I could not disagree more with these views.

Dr. Geek: Batfans, Putting the Fanatic Back in Fan

The theory goes that the term “fan” originated as a shortened form of fanatic.  Fanatic comes from long, long ago, when the only fanatics were of the religious type, as a way to describe such people with excessive zeal, enthusiasm and passion, as if driven mad and consumed by the madness.  Due to its etymological origin, the term fan, when […]

In Depth: Can the OUYA succeed and why should we want another home console?

The OUYA promises a $99 Android powered home console/dreamland for indie developers, but why? I don’t ask “why?” to be a good old-fashioned Debbie Downer, or even a Negative Nacy (or any other combination of adjective and name paired by alliteration), but rather to pose the very real question that the people behind OUYA should be asking; why do we […]

Dr. Geek: I’m Somepony, Are You?

He’s traveled around the world.  He’s eaten things that would make any non-foodie American squeamish at best and vomiting at worst.  He nearly killed himself riding an ATV on a New Zealand sand dune.  He has no reservations about speaking his mind on any topic, food related or not.  He is Anthony Bourdain, and he’s a brony.   In case […]

I survived a trip to L.A. and all I got was OH MY GOD E3!

E3 is the dream conference in the eyes of a gamer.  In that magical land of sack boys and blue hedgehogs you’re treated to all of the upcoming games and consoles.  A lot of us have to experience it through the warm, comforting glow of a computer screen.  However, some fortunate souls get to step through the doors of […]

Dr Geek: And Geeks Shall Inherit Space

Once upon a time, a call went out across the United States for men who had “the right stuff.”  Men who were fearless.  Men who were smart.  Men who were brave.  Men who could take commands.  Men who could handle cramped spaces, the rollercoaster ride from Hell, and the possibility of a hot, cold, or very wet death.  And men […]

In Depth: The 10 Ways Indie Developers Fail to Market Their Game

No matter what format, what system or what game you are developing for, there are certain things that can doom your game regardless of how good or bad it is from the start.  While this article is written with a focus on XBLIG’s, much of these apply to any indie game developer looking to make a dollar off of their […]

A first hand look at the Pokemon Battle Royale art show

People, hey, seriously, look at this. This is awesome. Now, I won’t say that I’m an avid art fan, nor would I say that I don’t have a level of respect for it.  That said, it’s rare that something like the opening of an art gallery can tear me away from Netflix or a cold beer.  Apparently though, all it […]
